Biography
Professor Meel has joined the University of Transkei in 1996. His special interest is in Occupational Health and thus he was motivated to start an Occupational Health Clinic for ex-mineworkers with the minimum of resources in May 1997. Since then he has examined over 3,000 ex-mineworkers. In 2002 Prof. Meel received an award of excellence for poverty alleviation and community services by the Impumelelo Award Trust, Cape Town. He was a finalist for the Science, Engineering and Technology Award, Pretoria in 2003. He is the recipient of the Vice Chancellors Award for excellence in research in 2002 and 2003. He has also a recipient of a Humanitarian Recognition Award 2005 from USA Chest Foundation and Health Professions Council (HPCSA), South Africa in 2007 for his work in the community service of ex-mineworkers. He has published about 100 research articles. He is married to Veena and has four children, Anita, Ruchika, Piyush, and Swati. All are medically qualified doctors.
